LAB MEMBERS

ANGELA MITCHELL, PH.D.
Principle Investigator
Angela Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University. She is interested in the interactions between bacterial stress responses and antimicrobial resistance. Angela received her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 and did her postdoctoral work at Princeton University.

JOSEPH CARR
Postdoctoral Associate
Joseph F. Carr is a Postdoc in the Mitchell Lab. He is interested in uncovering the roles of wzzE and yhdP on cyclic enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) biosynthesis and antibiotic resistance. He received his undergraduate degree at Clemson University and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Texas A&M University working in the Mitchell Lab. Before joining the Mitchell Lab, his research interest included a broad sway of topics from Biogeochemistry which he studied soil chemistry and bacterial relations; to Mammology in which he studied speciation and habitat range of Red Squirrels

HALEY HILL
Graduate Student
Haley Hill is a Ph.D. candidate in the Biology Department at Texas A&M University. Her research in the Mitchell Lab focuses on uncovering the regulation of the biosynthesis of a carbohydrate-derived moiety highly conserved in Enterobacterales, known as Enterobacterial Common Antigen (ECA). She is also examining the environmental conditions important for regulating ECA’s biosynthesis, and ECA’s potential role in acid stress responses. Before arriving at TAMU and joining the Mitchell Lab, Haley received her master’s degree in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida.

SHIVANI BHUT
Graduate Student
Hello! My name is Shivani Bhut, and I am a microbiology PhD candidate in the Mitchell Lab. My current research focuses on uncovering essential isoprenoid regulation in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. I fell in love with microbes during my undergraduate years at Brandeis University, where I obtained my B.S. in biology and B.A. in neuroscience and conducted research on influenza. I am particularly fascinated by how sophisticated microbial defense mechanisms can be, despite being invisible to the naked eye. After my PhD, I plan to pursue a career in infectious disease research. Outside of the lab, I enjoy rock climbing and reading in my free time.

JENNIFERÂ RUDOLF
Graduate Student
Jenny Rudolf is a Ph.D. student in the Microbiology program at Texas A&M University. In the Mitchell lab, she is particularly interested in wzyE, the enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) polymerase, and its essentiality in Enterobacterales. Before starting her Ph.D., Jenny attended Texas A&M, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Biology alongside a Mathematics minor.

SARAH VASTANI
Research Technician
Hi! I’m Sarah Vastani. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s in Mathematics. I’ve conducted research in the Zoran Lab, where I investigated circadian clock proteins in the central nervous system of annelid worms. More recently, in the Delmore Lab, I developed a Random Forest machine learning model to identify traits associated with migratory survival in songbirds. I’m passionate about combining biological insight with computational tools to understand the natural world better. Outside the lab, I enjoy teaching and currently teach 4th-grade religious education classes.

DANIEL WARZECHA
Graduate Student
Daniel Warzecha is a Microbiology Ph.D. student in the Biology Department at Texas A&M University. In the Mitchell lab, his research focuses on the interactions between phospholipid composition and ECA activity, and how these interactions affect outer membrane permeability. Before joining the Ph.D. program, Daniel was a Microbiology major at Texas A&M, where he studied the synthesis of cyclic ECA as well as sex determination in Drosophila melanogaster.

HANNAH FUHRMAN
Undergraduate Student
Howdy! My name is Hannah Fuhrman, and I am a Neuroscience major on the molecular and cellular track. I am additionally participating in the departmental honors program for biology. I am a member of RUF and their worship team, as well as Phi Eta Sigma and a couple of other organizations. I will be attending medical school later this year and would like to pursue research in medical school alongside my studies.

BERK ALAN DOGAN
Graduate Student
Howdy! I’m a Ph.D student in the Microbiology program at Texas A&M University. My investigations in the Mitchell lab focus on the biosynthetic pathway of phosphoglyceride linked common antigen (ECAPG) in E. coli. I previously obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Middle East Technical University in Turkey, where I investigated the link between secondary metabolites and sporulation in B. subtilis. Outside of lab I enjoy baking, hiking and sketching.

ELIZABETH PONDER
Undergraduate Student
Elizabeth Ponder is a senior undergraduate Biology major with minors in Psychology and History. She is an active member of the Aggie Blossoms Women’s Organization and serves as Vice President of the Texas A&M Pre-Medical Society. Next year, she will matriculate into medical school to pursue an M.D. degree, where she plans to continue researching.
