The Mitchell Lab will be opening in September!
Gram-negative bacteria are incredibly resistant to antibiotics. This is in large part due to the presences of the outer membrane (OM), which is highly impermeable to many antibiotics. Moreover, stress can make this barrier even more impermeable!
Our goal is to find and understand mechanisms that strengthen the OM permeability barrier during stress. Using genetics and biochemistry, we will investigate changes that occur to the OM under stress, mechanisms that strengthen the OM permeability barrier, and the role of these changes in antibiotic resistance and pathogenesis.
